Peaceful Coexistence Strengthened Between Pokot, Ilchamus, and Tugen Communities

The year began with improved collaboration between communities once divided by decades of violence. CPI Kenya’s Inter-Community Peace Project continued to foster peaceful coexistence through children and family friendship programs, peace dialogues, and outreach to herders and warriors.

  • Only one unsuccessful cattle raid was reported in the first six months of 2025 — a remarkable improvement from the frequent attacks seen before the peace project began in 2022.

  • Community leaders and elders now resolve emerging tensions swiftly, preventing escalation.

  • Communities have resumed shared use of markets, schools, and water points, and the free movement of people and livestock continues to improve.

  • Youths from both sides initiated their own inter-village peace tournaments, deepening grassroots ownership of the peace process.

Displaced Families Return Home After 20 Years

A milestone achievement during this period was the return of over 450 Ilchamus families to their ancestral homes in Mukutani Village after two decades of displacement due to tribal clashes with the Pokot community.CPI Kenya’s friendship and inter-family connection model played a major role in restoring trust and encouraging these families to rebuild their lives side by side with their Pokot neighbors.

Empowering Communities Through Governance and Livelihoods

CPI Kenya conducted governance, human rights, and advocacy trainings, reaching over 80 community members in Tiaty East and Baringo South. Participants learned how to demand accountability, monitor government projects, and engage in local decision-making.

Additionally, alternative livelihood initiatives are taking root:

  • Pokot families are increasingly turning to farming, beekeeping, and Aloe Vera cultivation.

  • Ilchamus women groups have started honey and dry fish enterprises, contributing to family income and breaking traditional taboos that once restricted women’s participation in trade.

These innovations are helping the communities adapt to climate change and reduce dependence on livestock — a major source of past conflicts.
